"The Making of a Super Mega Magnificent Tremendously Immensely Peptide Powerful Chad" by Rebekah Wood
The Class of 20206 Entertainment Committee entered Harbor Hall last Saturday with toes gripped and jaws set. They had reached their final test. The blood, sweat, and tears they had poured into their previous performances--High School Musical and Aladdin--had really just been preparing them for this moment: After JSB Dinner.
After their sensational performance of Hercules the night before, the juniors were no doubt expecting something impressive in return. The seniors quickly settled on the theme Jerkules and got right to work. They had 9 hours to pull together a theater masterpiece. Time was as precious as gold and mistakes were not an option.
As if by second nature, everyone snapped back into their respective roles. Rebekah Wood (12) compiled everyone’s ideas into a rough script while Ee Rynn Ong (12) brainstormed tributes and others scavenged through costumes. Within a mere 2 hours, the script was written and cast.
Stepping into the roles of the title character, originally played by Carter Bui (11) and Enoch Yoon (11), were Nadia Book (12) and Aidan Boyd (12), turning the character into a looksmaxxing-obsessed jerk who desired Meg’s ankles above all else. After Olive Berend’s (11) flawless performance of Megara, Yewon Lee (12) had big shoes to fill. And she did not disappoint but brought the cool, flirty, sarcastic character to life. After his captivating performance in JSB, Aaron Andrews (12) decided to take things a different direction and play the emotionless and cold-hearted villain, Hades, taking over from Bowen Zhang (11).
However, the true stars of the production were the actors who took on Josh Lacap’s Phil. Logan Kaloo (12), a late casting addition, was at first hesitant to display his hidden acting talents. However, he played the exasperated and lovesick mentor to perfection, matching Jerkules’ energy while also revealing the kind heart of a true hero. As he willingly sacrificed himself for Meg, his moving performance brought many to tears. His selfless act transformed him into a “Super Mega Magnificent Tremendously Immensely Peptide Powerful Chad”, played by none other than Phillip DeVries (12) himself. Costar Aidan Boyd commented, “Logan was mad high T as Phil, and when he ascended into being Phil DeVries it was the most aura moment of the school year.”
Cheers and shouts erupted across the hall as the senior’s very own Phil blessed the dinner with his spectacular appearance. Nadia Book reflects, “I love how everyone came together to create something that truly embodies the junior class spirit.” The curtains closed and the entertainment committee lined up to take their final bow. Matthias Severatnam (12) proudly describes the production as “a spectacular performance that included elements of both modern terminology and life lessons about being selfless.”
They had completed the test--all grueling training from junior year had paid off in a final, triumphant performance. As the applause died, the Class of 2026 Entertainment Committee signed off and passed the baton to the next generation.
