Despite blistering heat and long travel times, the varsity track and field team secures a combined third-place finish at ACSC in the Philippines.
The events were held on Brent International School's massive campus following an amazing opening ceremony, cultural event, and service project, situated at Faith Academy. I managed to set personal records in all my events, which was great, and won a bronze medal in the 4x100 relay.
The 200m, however, proved to be a humbling reminder that speed and endurance are two very different things. Crossing the finish line felt more like finishing a marathon than a sprint, highlighting a noticeable lack of cardio as I collapsed onto the track.
Teammate Zoey Dunham (8) understood the physical toll. "The 200m is one of the most competitive events at ACSC, yet it is also one of the most rewarding," she noted. "Achieving your PR is worth the pain later on, as Ethan learned while he laid on the track completely spent five minutes after his race. As one of the track babies, it was really inspiring to see the seniors perform so well! I really hope I can make Dalat this proud in my senior year too!"
My final event was the 400m. I wasn't nervous about the race itself as it wasn't really my event, but rather, its aftermath. After crossing the finish line, I fell to the ground in pain, while ice was being massaged on my hamstrings.
"Why did you put me in the 400?" I asked Mr. G.
"Oh, for points," he replied with a smile on his face. I didn't end up winning any points in that event, but I did lie on the ground for a good 15 minutes.
The journey to Manila tested out our endurance before we even ran. At Penang International Airport, Alex Misra (12), Matthias Seevaratnam (12), and I killed a three-hour wait by using all the Duplo blocks available to make a super tower. By the time we left the LEGO store, the storekeeper probably hated us. We then played Brawl Stars on a massage chair that kept telling us to get off because we were sitting there for free.
Accommodations in the Philippines brought their own hurdles. Caleb Evans (12), Aaron Morrison (12), and I shared a small, windowless room where navigating from bed to bathroom meant stepping over my luggage. Apparently, all rooms, mine included, were cockroach-infested. Luckily, I never encountered one, but my roommates did. With little to do within a 100m radius from our hotel, I ended up playing Brawl Stars with my friends in 1 room, which had to be one of the highlights of the trip.
