Fall Break might have been the week of rest for most Dalat International School students, but for many, it would have had an enduring impact on individuals with service. The Impact trips were trips where God chose people to serve the communities in faraway places. Revealing that this could be someone’s first trip or one of many trips, each individual has made a sacrifice, either by not having rest or spending time with family, friends, or animals, but knowing that the value of serving others through the image of God brings happiness and impact upon others is the true form of gratitude and peace.
This year, Dalat introduced a new trip to Sabah, or a new place to serve, focusing on the CFFM Community, home to many stateless, underprivileged children who had different stories of how they ended up here. Staying in this community center was the safest place to get what is enough because privileged individuals like us would complain about cleaning, washing dishes, or even about the hygiene there, but the only worry of theirs is gone for their only worry was to receive education, a good relationship with God, and emotional support with peace; nothing else. They received all of this, and they thought that many individuals who came to serve would be grateful for what we are given by the Lord. Serving them through the positive relationship was not the only task on the trip. We also built them a tire road that would benefit their organic farming. With the tires existing, during rainy seasons in Sabah, many of them are able to not slip whilst doing farming, which is something that left an impact on them.
Keeping aside some of the service, other valuable moments in the Sabah Impact Trip should be talked about. On the last few days of the trip, Jonathan, the host of CFFM, told us that we were going to be cutting a hen and eating it for dinner. As an individual, I volunteered, but the tears rolling down my face from seeing the chicken screaming that its life was going to be sacrificed for the meal of us left a huge hole in my heart. Speaking about this to our Impact Teacher Leader, Ms. Sherwynne Goh, she mentioned that if the killing of chicken hurts everyone of you so much, imagine how much have Jesus sacrificed for our sins by dying on the cross, imagine the pain he endured just so that he can save his from our sins; in fact none of the sins this man had even made, he didn’t even need to die on the cross but he did it for us. This was a major highlight that stood at the heart of the Dalat people who came to serve in Sabah and especially the word that stood out to me throughout this trip.
Fun moments within the relationships of others are something crucial that was received throughout the Sabah Impact Trip. Veronica Bae (10) had an incident where a cockroach was found in our room, but because Veronica’s luggage was the only one opened, the roommates made a joke that the cockroach was in her luggage. Finally, at night, whilst opening the luggage, a so-called big cockroach was found. The screaming was louder than ever, but it was for the tiniest cockroach existing.
Working in farming was interesting, too, because the relationships gain between groups increased significantly in terms of hard work and teamwork encouragement; therefore, another opportunity for the Impact Trip of Sabah should be included for individuals to experience the service and culture of East Malaysia.
