My last class had just ended, and my favorite part of the day had started. As I heard the bell ring, my friend Hugo Yeoh (12) asked me, “Why do you have such a big smile on your face?”
I quickly responded, unable to contain a smile, “Because I’ve been waiting all day for this.”
I walked quickly to the Math Club, only to be stopped by my brother asking when we were leaving. I gave him a quick response and scurried upstairs. As I entered the class, I felt a sense of relief and excitement for what was to come. I won’t pretend, I was a little drained from the school day, but since I had gotten there rather early, I had some extra time. I placed my arms in front of me and took a quick nap.
I was awoken by ExCom president and Math Club founder Hsien Ler Sim (11).
“Why are you so tired?” he asked
“College applications,” I briefly stated and went back to sleep for a solid 10 seconds before he decided to announce what we were doing today.
“Today we are going to be working on a project where you have to research a math topic which can be anything that has ever interested you or you would like to learn. You can work individually or in groups of 2 or 3,” exclaimed Ler.
As soon as he finished, of course I had to snag the opportunity: I asked the founder himself to be my partner.
Immediately we got to work, researching which topic would be challenging yet fun to learn. We came to a consensus of modulus. Ler convinced me by explaining how you can send messages to another party without an external party being able to decipher it.
The class was pure bliss. We played a fun khan academy game; I can’t say the same for the video, but together, they made the experience far more memorable.
I was ready to leave, brain fully saturated from all the knowledge I acquired. I looked at my phone, and opened Grab only to see a measly 87 cents. Thankfully, Ler helped me get transport home. I thanked him and headed home, smiling to myself. Math Club had once again turned an ordinary day into something I’d always look forward to.
