As the mid-semester break begins, students can finally relax after the tests and assignments they have been assigned over the past few weeks. With this free time, some students decide to pursue some personal goals, like obtaining their driver’s license.
My final driving test will take place this Thursday, and it will mark the culmination of everything I have learned from the 16 hours I have spent at this institution. This is my second time retaking the test, and I would be embarrassed if I failed again. Thankfully, I passed the road and had only the circuit to complete.
The driving test consists of three sections for someone to pass, and this is reasonable as driving can be dangerous if not handled correctly. During the first section, examiners at the institution will test the driver on one of the three roads (A, B, or C) taught during the mandatory 16 hours of lessons. The second section commences when the driver successfully passes. They are to be escorted to a car, whose objective is to name every essential part of it. This includes the exterior and interior of the vehicle, but fortunately, the examiner isn’t too strict in this area, which makes it easier to pass this section. Eventually, the final section, the basic circuit, which I failed before, was tested. After completing all of these, the driver will be granted a P license and can legally drive.
When the day arrived, I made sure to get up early and arrive at the center right on time. As I walked towards the entrance, I noticed a familiar face heading in the same direction. It was a good friend of mine, Abby, from 12th grade, and we exchanged greetings. Unfortunately, we couldn’t talk for long as the institution separated returning drivers from first-time drivers.
Before she was about to leave for her designated zone, she said, “Good luck, bro. I hope you don’t fail again!”
I was then on my own again, and after waiting for what felt like hours, I was called to take my test. I was initially nervous, but I knew that if I had to fail again, I’d have to spend another 100 RM to retake it. This motivated me to focus on passing, as 100 RM can buy quite a lot.
The thought of spending so much money on retesting baffled me, and it circled endlessly through my mind as I took my test. After finishing everything methodically and carefully, I was asked to return to my area and wait for my results. It took forever for them to return me the slip of paper that decided my fate. And when they announced my name for the last time, I was given the paper. I scrutinized the document, and to my relief, the word “lulus” was stamped boldly across the paper. Lulus translates to “pass” in English, and I was at last freed from this burden. I never knew the time would come when I would finally be able to drive all by myself.
