When the juniors added “karaoke” to After-Sneak Dinner, they had no idea it would result in the musical debut of one of the seniors’ most talented: Clark Zhang.
Clark was sitting at table 4, enjoying time with his friends after Senior Sneak, when the juniors announced karaoke. His table did not hesitate to sign up. Afterward, Clark reflected on his decision to sing, saying that even though he was a little nervous, “I liked singing and I was proud of my voice.”
Clark was a part of two songs that Monday night: “Hoist the Colors” and “Eenie Meenie” by Justin Bieber.
As he got onto the stage with his friends for the first song, he was handed one of two mics. When the song began, Clark's mic amplified his voice loud over the rest. Was the other mic turned down? Was it off? Attendants of the night will never know. What they do know is that there was a 50/50 chance for Clark to get the working microphone; that night luck was on Clark’s side.
After a shaky start and some laughter, Clark’s voice soon dominated the room, with his friends performing backup. The seniors and juniors listened speechless to the melodious sea shanty. Though the effect of Clark’s voice cannot truly be captured on paper, Nayoung Ko (12) perhaps summed it up the best: “It made me emotional.”
Clark wasn’t done, however. He had given his class a taste of his talent. Now it was time for him to unveil his whole range. He and his friends met cheers and screams of excitement as they jogged up the stage stairs, reentering the spotlight for their second song. Once again, Clark was handed the loud mike.
This time his friends lined up behind Clark as he sang. Jayden Juday (12) remembers that Clark’s earnest and passionate singing “transformed the environment.” The room belted the song with him, infected by Clark’s hype.
Jane Lee (12) smiled as she reflected on the performance, “He really owned the stage.”
Nikhil Pillay (12) was just one of many who felt deeply “inspired” by Clark. Others, like Jayden Juday, felt proud to be his friend.
Matthias Seevaratnam (12), who got to sing with Clark on stage, is still in awe of the experience. “I felt honored and I liked his really deep voice,” he exclaimed.
Clark’s peers now see Clark in a brand new light.
“He should go on America’s Got Talent,” proclaimed Dharrshini M Yuva Raja (12) as she thought back to his singing.
Without a doubt, Clark has emerged as a star in the Class of 2026, and they will be eagerly watching his tale of success after high school.
