Fast reflexes, powerful slams, and long rallies embodied the match involving Cay Den Eu (12), Aiden Ko (12), David Isaac Lee (12), and YJ Lim (12) on Monday, August 17. After having a scrumptious meal at the Galley, these students were prepared to fight for the king’s space in four-square. With the Harbor Hall behind him, Cay Den held his ground in the king's space, not letting anyone catch him off guard. David and YJ were plotting to overthrow his rule on the court so they could advance to the next spaces. Aiden was aloof with a look on his face that nobody could clearly interpret.
This round, Cay Den served the ball to David rapidly, catching him off guard. Despite the surprise, David smacked the ball and sent it flying toward Aiden’s queen’s square. Like that, the game got more and more intense, where one slip up would leave a person stuck in the loser’s square.
Instead of hitting the ball aimlessly, YJ unleashed his master plan to foil Cay Den. He mightily knocked the ball towards David, who, with his right arm in the air, prepared a devastating blow. His maneuver was so fast and calculated that only Aiden could perceive what went down.
YJ was out. Looking with pure shame and sorrow at his former companion, YJ moved off to the side of the street. In his place, a new challenger approached. Jia Jun Man (12) entered his square, maintaining a solemn look as he focused on Cay Den and the ball he carried.
When Cay Den served again, something was clearly different. Jia Jun’s play style was like speed met elegance and grace. Despite Cay Den’s immense power, Jia Jun swiftly sent the ball to David; he then knocked it with the back of his hand into the corner of Cay Den’s square.
This was it. Cay Den’s reign was over. With no time to move backward and react, Cay Den was sent to the back of the line. David had avenged YJ in his stead, and everyone cheered. Jia Jun remarked, “With great power comes great four-square ability.”
Events like this happen every day at lunch. Ephemeral experiences that mean the world in their moments at lunch and after school. Each day, a new story is ready to be told.
