Every semester is a new chance at grades, sports, and other activities. However, every semester, this one event happens 3 separate times, in one weekend.
During every semester of Dalat, there is a group of people, who meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday meet from 4-6 in Harbor Hall (sometimes Heritage Chapel.) These kids, who have a certain calling towards the dramatic productions by Dalat, join together for drama practice. One kid, a certain Nicholas Lim, expressed “It’s pretty chill- it’s the one place where everyone just kind of relaxes and laughs together, y’know?”
After around 15 weeks of meeting every week, and a few weekends where we all come together to build the beautiful sets, production day casts its gloomy shadow on all of us. What a simple watcher might see on stage as a well-cast, rehearsed production, could be a mix of joy, fear, but most importantly, a group of kids whose goal for the semester is to prove that they are a part of Dalat Drama, and that they were a part of something bigger than themselves. They proved that they kept this tradition of toil, and memorization alive with one more production. Aside from the pin that they receive, memory of laughter, and community lives with us our whole lives.
Giovanni Cipolla, a recent addition to the Dalat community, who attended two productions, states that it was “Absolutely worth the price of ten ringgit, and it was a very good… very good experience. I would do it again,” when faced with the questions of the pricing and enjoyment. He also went on to explain how he was considering whether he should join Drama, or continue with his sports. Eventually his discernment led him to choose sports instead of Drama, however he, as well as I, recruited David Drinkall to join as crew, which is a role that specializes in behind the scenes work, such as set building, sound effects, and backdrops.
So if you ever find yourself a little lost on what to do, or if you just want some weekend entertainment to look forward to, Dalat drama is the perfect opportunity to satisfy these desires.
