“Jane, I just really want to win against ISKL,” Tia Emmanuel said as we walked onto the field. The dark sky gloomed over us as the Petronas Twin Towers and KL city lights shone brightly around us.
Since our freshman year, we’ve played the ISKL girls' touch rugby team, and every time we've played them, we've lost. They were the team we always struggled to score against, and the team that constantly scored on us. This game was where we could finally redeem ourselves and continue our climb to win the tournament.
The Dalat team had already announced its presence in the tournament with a huge 5-0 win over the Alice Smith School team. Now, all we had left for the day was one more 30-minute-long game of endless sprinting and a big goal to beat ISKL. The referee blew the whistle, and the ISKL girls immediately sprinted towards our team. After a close call where they almost scored on us, we got the ball back, and our middles carried it swiftly up the field. Soon, halftime was called, and all our girls came off the field huffing and puffing. There is truly no greater bonding experience than being so insanely exhausted together.
Yi Wen Cheok said, “I was very frustrated with myself in the first half, but I kept my composure and walked out onto the field with my team. I cooled down to reflect, and in the second half, I was quicker and more aware of my position.”
With encouragement from each other, we carried our tired bodies back onto the field with whatever mental energy we had left. The ISKL girls clearly had a strong motive to win, but our team’s bond and connection were much stronger.
The referee blew the final whistle, signaling the end of the game. We soon learned that the score was 5-3, and we had finally secured the victory against ISKL. Lindsay Goh, one of the star players on the team, later reflected on the game saying, “After we won against ISKL, I felt as if I was dreaming, because all those years of hard work finally paid off and we were finally able to beat them!!!!”
The next day, we continued to play with high spirits after our win against ISKL. Our team made it into the finals, meaning that we were fighting for the championship title. The game was against a Malaysian club team that played touch rugby year-round. We put in our best efforts and unfortunately lost, 5-9, but our team left that field with so much more than a loss. This trip truly bonded our team as we worked together to reach a long-standing goal and earn a silver medal, through laughter, smiles, lots of sweat, and even some tears.
My hope is that we carry this same strong bond over to our last tournament, where we will score more tries and make many more treasured memories. I am so insanely proud and grateful for this sisterhood of try-scoring girls.
