Dalat is famously known for encouraging wholesome relationships with the opposite sexes, being largely successful with their vision of virtuous relationships. Originating as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine, Saint Valentine’s Day has become a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance, commitment, and love.
From February 3rd to 6th, dedicated parents took pre-orders every lunchtime for RM5. The Dalat PTO had their annual fundraiser selling their homemade chocolate chip cookies. From besties to siblings, this gift is appropriate for anyone who appreciates something sweet for Valentine’s Day. They also sold Valentine’s themed strawberry popcorn on February 13th only.
The proceeds go to the PTO fund which supports the school meaningfully. An announcement was made in the Dalat newsletter expressing their gratitude for the Dalat community's support seen in the quote below.
“This year we sold 1,807 cookies, a new PTO record. We are so grateful for your enthusiasm and support. Thank you for spreading kindness, encouragement, and joy across campus.”
The Surf Shack, this year's Junior Class Store, strategically planned to have pink and white ice cream flavors stocked for Valentine’s. The week’s flavors were strawberry and vanilla. They also advertised a Valentine’s Special Set on Wednesday, February 11th. Together with a lovely custom note, a choice of pink and red carnations were offered in the set. They can symbolize faithfulness and serve as an alternative for traditional roses. Several students were seen receiving the Valentine’s set around campus.
This year’s Junior Class vice president, Zi Xin Huang (11), was very involved with the Surf Shack. I interviewed her about her experience during the previous week.
Huang mentioned the following, “Though at first not a lot of people were interested, more and more came as they saw a small crowd gather in the front of the store. Just seeing people giving the flowers to their friends or loved ones just melted my heart. It was a special feeling, when we saw others carrying those flowers around campus. I can't describe that feeling well, but it just felt warm."
