Freedom for All

Merdeka Day on 31st August (Saturday) was no doubt a joyful event to celebrate for the whole of Malaysia but also for us—  the students of Dalat International School. Finally, we were able to enjoy some free time on Friday because there was no school after working so hard and studying so efficiently for only four weeks!

This day was important for all Malaysians, as they gained their independence in 1957. It was far more than just a holiday; it was the day where Malaysia was able to gain its independence from the British. The exchange was in a very peaceful manner through light talks and calmness. And last Saturday marked the 62 years of independence of Malaysia.

On the other hand, over the course of last week, students of Dalat were all getting ready and excited to be elsewhere instead of at school. They came prepared last Thursday; students were rushing to finish their assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests to avoid having to touch any of it during the long weekend break.

When asked about how happy he was to have a break on Friday, Abel Tan (11) answered with a wide smile, “I felt so happy to be out of school! As I am a Junior, school was already stressful for me even though it was just four weeks into school. With my hectic schedule., I barely have time for myself, and besides that, I still have Junior class to take care of. So this break provided some quiet time for me to relax and hang out with friends.”

Having Friday off just provided more opportunities for every student to rest at home, but there were also sports team that travelled down to ISKL for tournaments. They travelled by bus on Friday morning at 7 am, and there were many exciting games waiting for them. Although they had limited time for resting and it was very tiring to travel, they still enjoyed their trip and had lots of laughter and jokes for entertainment.

It was a blessing to have a long weekend break in the busy month of August to celebrate not only the independence of Malaysia but also for a free day out of school. Almost every shop in every mall had discounts for some items, and students and teachers went out shopping for clothes, cosmetics, shoes, bags, games, food, and so on. They definitely used their time well to do what they wanted to do and also hopefully got enough sleep to recover from all those restless nights that happened during school days before.
